Notes from the Field………Chapter Chairperson

Hello, my name is Kelly Lewellen the 2010- 2011 Chair for the Florida Chapter. I am excited about our 2010 program and hope you are too. I have enjoyed my tenure as Chair-elect and hope to capitalize on all that I learned to continue our Chapter’s growth and increase member participation. Please feel free to offer suggestions on how we can improve, or even tell us what you want us to continue.

We will continue having meetings at different locations around Florida, which I have found to be very beneficial because you meet so many great people. Our Winter/Spring meetings will be in South Florida (Jan), St. Augustine (Feb), and Tampa Area (April) with a Golf event in March. After a summer break we will get the ball rolling again in September with a meeting in St. Augustine and then a CEP course in South Florida (October). If you have any suggestions for the topic for the CEP course feel free to contact any of the Officers.

If you have not heard, to increase member participation and support our affiliate Society of Cosmetic Chemist Chapters, the Florida Chapter is sponsor-ing a contest to send one Florida Chapter member to the Carolina’s Chapter “Naturally Carolina”, see page 10 for more details. I have heard good things about this event and hope to see a lucky Florida Chapter member there.

Our first meeting for 2010 took place in Weston, Florida. Eric Abrutyn was our speaker and he gave two extremely interesting talks. The first presentation, “Innovation Continuum & Continuous Product Development: A Lifecycle Perspective”, was a great overview with personal anecdotes from his own career.
The second talk was over dessert “Chemistry of Cooking: Linking Cooking Chemistry and Cosmetic Formulation”, explained some of the similarities in Cooking to Formulations. During my career I have noticed that many formulators were also very “into” cooking, Eric touched on why many of us take our creative spirits and scientific pursuits from the lab into the kitchen.
I look forward to seeing you at the next meeting in St. Augustine.

Kelly
